Victory at Hill 70 with Dr. John Scott Cowan
The concentration on commemorating the Canadian victory at Vimy Ridge in April 1917 has had the unintended consequence of casting into shadow a later and arguably greater Canadian achievement in August of that year: the victory at Hill 70, planned, led and executed by Canadians almost from start to finish, resulting in the destruction of five German divisions. The Hill 70 Memorial Project was established in 2012 to correct this long-standing oversight. In September 2019, using only privately-raised funds, the Project dedicated the Hill 70 Monument at Loos-en-Gohelle, France. Dr John Scott Cowan, Principal Emeritus of Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, who serves as Vice Chair and Director of Research of the Project, discusses the significance of the battle for Canada.
